‘BEYOND BLUEWASHING’: THE MISSION TO FIGHT CORPORATE ABUSE

Writer's picture: Ashna AroraAshna Arora

Over recent years, corporations have been under scrutiny for their immoral acts upon greenwashing that has increased pollution on a global level. The fight to be green has been accelerated by the public's desire to be as ethical as possible. However, many questions still arise around why the primary attention on corporations is predominantly on environmental issues and not the array of other concerns corporations participate within.

The abuse of employees is a prominent issue that the globe faces, not just in third world countries but also within western societies. The hike in corporations deceives the general public by acting like they are sustainable and ethical across the board when they are not adhering to moral regulatory bodies. The daunting thought of corporations carrying out corrupt acts is titled a 'scandal' and not being treated with proper punishment. All these concerns surround the crisis of bluewashing.

A broader view of corporations and their illicit activities is being put under a microscope to increase awareness around these issues on the whole, as well as including the green crisis within the objectives of bluewashing. Furthermore, the 'Beyond Bluewashing' initiative embraces the fight for an ethical and more aware economy that promotes the awareness and principles that these corporations need to strive towards and provides the public with this extensive project. Therefore, we delve deeper into this new and emerging project by discussing future aspirations and understanding its actual missions with the founder and senior project manager, Jessica.

What made you interested in founding and fighting for this international issue?

Upon researching within a sub-area of bluewashing, I stumbled across the term and became very interested in the concerns around it. As someone who had never heard about bluewashing before, on any level, I became quickly intrigued to learn more as it covered a range of topics within business law that I found very interesting.

Delving into bluewashing allowed me to see the genuine concerns across the board that many corporations, big and small, partake in, and I found the corporate governance and corruption elements very interesting as a student wishing to enter the workplace as a corporate solicitor down the line.

The broadness of bluewashing can be a lot for people to retain and follow. Still, as this area possessed a gap in research, I wished to advocate its existence, and I knew this project would also attract like-minded individuals with interests under sub-areas of bluewashing. Therefore, I utilised my platform and became a doer and not just a thinker.

Can you explain what Bluewashing is, as well as the pillars associated within this project?

Bluewashing is defined as describing deceptive techniques corporations use to overstate a company's commitments to responsible social practices. This term can be used to express a corporation carrying out abusive actions in private within the workplace towards employees and is closely related to deceiving the public with their 'green' focuses when they are secretly covering an ecocide crisis.

Bluewashing was established after many corporations signed the UN Global Compact, unregulated, deceived the public with this blue badge, and continued to carry out unethical social practices. The attention of this project is not focused upon this Compact, but more on the concerns this Compact raised and the corrupt corporations that carry out 'blue' activity. This is why the project is titled 'Beyond Bluewashing', as we go below the surface and highlight other concerns around the areas of bluewashing.

As this term is extensive, we divided the areas of bluewashing up to allow the public to understand each component better. Therefore, there are pillars of bluewashing in the following areas: human rights, labour, environment, corruption and corporate governance. All areas cover the actual actions of bluewashing and give the public a better insight into areas of concern that the media would not usually talk about.

Are there any aspiring goals you have with the future of this project?

The initial phase of this project consists of five academic research papers into the concerns around bluewashing. Still, it acts more like a basic introduction to jump off and discuss further issues. Therefore, the aspirations around this project are to carry out further research and close a gap in this area but on very niche areas of bluewashing. In addition, we would like to provide our platform as one that centres around this issue, so our followers are consistently updated on bluewashing related matters. Finally, we do have many ideas for the future of this project, but you will all have to keep a lookout for these over the upcoming year!
