A handful of firms have been "named and shamed" by the Government for underpaying their employees the minimum wage. Overall, 191 firms have been reviewed between 2011 and 2018 failed to pay £2.1M to more than 34,000 employees.

But experts are hoping for less shaming and more supporting to ensure that companies comply with the minimum wage. For example, this newly released report refers to historical wage errors back-paid and amended since then.

This extensive list included firms of all sizes and in many sectors, from football clubs to care homes and laundrettes. All firms had to reimburse the 34,000 workers a total of £2.1M in underpaid wages and pay a fine of £3.2M to HMRC.

Around 47 per cent of the firms listed on this report were wrongly deducting pay from workers for training, uniform and other expenses. In addition, only 30 per cent of those businesses were failing to pay standard wage as they were failing to pay for overtime.

Paul Scully, Business Minister, stated that "Our minimum wage laws are there to ensure a fair day's work gets a fair day's pay – it is unacceptable for any company to come up short. All employers, including those on this list, need to pay workers properly."

Scully also released a statement saying that our "government will continue to protect workers' rights vigilantly, and employers that short-change workers won't get off lightly."
