POLICE UNFAZED OVER CLIMATE CHANGE PROTESTS

The Extinction Rebellion (XR) protest in London has police unfazed as they state that they would not be deterred by recent supreme court rulings and would obstruct this lawful protest.

In June, the supreme court handed down the Zeigler judgement, which ruled the exercise of protesting as a "lawful excuse" for obstructing the highway.

However, police can still take action if they see desirable "if they see wilful obstruction".

On Friday, a brief on this protest was carried out. Matt Twist, the deputy assistant commissioner of the Metropolitan Police, said, "If there's a wilful obstruction, which is unreasonable, and it's extended [in] impact, then, of course, I think there'll be an expectation that police take action."

In the past, XR has carried out four protests within London and has blocked roads for days to create disruptive behaviour to showcase their target towards infrastructure and government sites.

XR activist protests have accounted for hundreds of arrests in the past; recent protests will probably still follow suit.
